Icebergs on the Greenland Coast: E&W, 69°- 80°N.
Awe-inspiring and fearsome in different lights and seasons.Icebergs all come from the diminishing Greenland Ice Cap. With a warming climate and more meltwater, the glaciers that descend from the ice cap are frequently moving at a faster pace, calving magnificent ice begs into the fjords and on the coast. The Arctic is warming at twice the pace of the rest of the planet. Most ice bergs are made from snow that fell on the Greenland Ice Cap thousands of years ago in a pre-industrial era. The colour of ice is stunning in the ever changing Arctic light.

Trinafour to Dalnacardoch on a winter night
Переглядів 6128 років тому
The route of General Wade's Military Road from the village of Trinafour to the snow gates on the A9, south of Drumochter summit in the Scottish Highlands. The high single track road leaves few opportunities to turn around in snow and darkness. General Wade started a network of roads across Scotland to supress and extert control over the Scots following the Jacobite uprising of 1715. General Wad...

In the Ilulissat Sea Ice
Переглядів 10 тис.9 років тому
It is 30 years since Greenlanders have been able to fish from on the sea ice off Ilulissat, but there is enough ice to make it difficult for boats. Today it is -28°C. Boats work together, sometimes making progress metre by metre. Most use long multi-hook lines to fish for the Greenland halibut that abound where the Sermeq Kujalleq ice bergs are grounded on the threshold at the mouth of Kangia, ...
A glimpse of Pangnirtung, Baffin Island ᐸᖕᓂᖅᑑᖅ
Переглядів 1,9 тис.9 років тому
Pangnirtung, population 1400, is a settlement off Cumberland Sound in south-east Baffin Island. I applied for my first job in Pangnirtung in 1968. I went elsewhere, so I was pleased to visit at last and spend a day in this vibrant community, now known for its exceptional tidal range, its turbot fishery and superb high quality print making and weaving. The opening image by a local artist is a re...

The haunting memorial to three million Belarusians died during the Second World War. On March 22, 1943, the entire population of Khatyn village was massacred by the 118th Schutzmannschaft Nazi battalion. The massacre was not an isolated incident. Hundreds of Belarusian settlements were burned by the Nazis and some or all their inhabitants were killed as a punishment for collaboration with parti...

Beautiful tribute to my Home town that I left 21 years ago. Miss it. But times have changed. Family have gone. Not the same when I go back to visit. The shops of old hold amazing memories. It was a simple happy friendly town. Very competitive and superficial place now. Bittersweet trip down memory lane.

I saw a documentary released this year, 2019, narrated by David Attenborough. I checked out some of what he explains and have yet to find anything to prove otherwise. He was giving data about the part of the jungle out there that Orangutans depend on, but it's relevant since most of the Proboscis Monkey's habitat has been replaced by the same things that have replaced the Orangutan's habitat. Here is just some of what he said: "We have now replaced up to 27 million hectares of virgin jungle with a single species of tree, which is oil palm." A hectare is equal to 2.47 acres in case you were wondering. "It's now estimated that we kill 100 orangutans every week from human activity. In the last four decades, the pristine lowland jungle that orangutans depend on has declined by a staggering 75 percent. Across the world, we are losing tropical forest at the rate of nearly 15 million hectares every year, and with it, the planet's treasure trove of diversity. Jungles store and capture more carbon than any other habitat on land. They cool our planet, provide food and medicines. We lose them, at our peril... Shame on us all... But that was yesterday right? Thanks for the video, as it's videos like this that inspire me to spread the word and change my ways. We don't need to live like cavemen. We just need to realize that those in charge of all the money, either really do have the blackest hearts imaginable, and/or are really just addicts, addicted to money and power. Because what's the telltale sign of someone with an addiction? Denial, which makes money and power the most dangerous things that exist to be addicted to, because they are in denial of the consequences of what they are doing. I believe in a freedom of religion, but I think our planet, and each other should come 1st. And by us, I mean all lifeforms. If we can't do that, maybe we should become extinct. Sorry for such a long comment, but as anyone who's lucky enough to still have a shred of humanity left can understand, I'm really upset by all this. Anyway, thanks for your time, and always remember: "FEAR is the true enemy, the only enemy. And our best weapon against fear, is knowledge."
